Analysis

Always on the Side of the Egg Analysis

Claim: The government, known as the system in this speech, needs to be stopped from harming innocent people and the only way to stop it is by the people of Israel to work together since they are the ones that created and started this government.

Audience: suffering people of Israel, people who work in the system such as the mayor of Jerusalem and the President of Israel

Context: Receiving the Jerusalem Prize for the Freedom of the Individual Society for his works-- Norwegian Wood, Kafka on the Shore, and the Wind- Up Chronicle. The Gaza War ended about a month before he presented this speech.

Purpose: to inform the reader on their position in the cause of the Gaza War and to also persuade the people to take action against the system and to make it in the way that they want it to be instead of the way it is now

Section 1: Introduction and "Truth lies within us"

Purpose: introduces the conflict in the Gaza, defines what the job of novelist and stories are suppose to be, informs on how novelist must pull the truth out of lies, attempts to persuade the people to change their thinking in following the government they are following now

Effectiveness: very effective because of the choice of words he decides to use and the message he is telling the people just from this first half of the speech

Appeals: uses a lot of ethos by building himself up as a novelist and the job he has and by saying how he had problems with coming but he decided to come anyway, uses minor pathos and logos by talking about the Gaza War

Techniques: uses parallel structure to speak on why he decided to come, uses metaphors to connect the military to animals

Section Two: "I will always stand on the side of the egg"

Purpose: introduces the system as a wall and the people as eggs, persuades the people on how they can be able to overpower the system, talks about stories again to inform the people how they help them in the situation they are in now

Effectiveness: very effective because he uses a powerful quote then goes into explaining it thoroughly and explains to the people how they are able to be more than they are now, also his examples and word choice again makes this part just as effective, if not more, than the first part

Appeals: ethos by talking about his fathers, pathos by telling the people about themselves being eggs and how eggs can be more effecting than a wall, logos by again talking a little about the Gaza War

Techniques: epitaph when he talks about his dead dad and how he understands how it feels for someone to be taken away and also the talk about what he learned from him, paradox because the wall would seem the one to win but the eggs are more powerful than the wall

General Analysis

Haruki Murakami does a wonderful job with this speech. He uses different types of techniques and appeals to captivate the people and empower them to go against the government that is hurting them and not helping them like it should. It is also surprising for him to do such a thing since he isn't from Israel but wants so much for them to be free from this government they have. Also, for him to say this speech in front of the mayor and the president makes it even more surprising. His use of language and his metaphors are very effective in his argument and I feel he does an amazing job with his speech.

It Is What We Need to Do

During World War 2, the people all needed a leader to look up to. With all the turmoil and destruction that was happening uniquely to each country that was involved, hope and faith to go through the war was needed to keep the people going. So, that is what Churchill, Hirohito, and Goebbels gave to the people. He gave them exactly what they wanted. With all these speakers, besides giving the inspirational and heart moving feelings through their speeches, they also told the people it was their duty or fate to go through with whatever plan they had set up to win or just get through the war. All these speakers have different situations and people to deal with but they all speak of their country having a responsibility that they must endure.

Hirohito tells his people that “it is according to the dictates of time and fate that we have resolved to pave the way for a grand peace”. He is inclining that it is the duty of the people to back down and surrender to the other nations because it was their destiny for it to be this way. He is giving the people reason to follow behind him in this decision by telling them that it is their “time and fate” to show the other nations that they are more than fighting and bring in peace. Goebbels does this as well to let the people follow him by giving them this great responsibility. Throughout his speech, he indirectly tells the people how they are the only hope for Europe. “Only the German Reich and its allies are in the position to resist this danger.” He is making the people feel that they need to do this or they are destroying Europe and taking away the only hope it has. Churchill doesn’t bluntly tell the people that it is their fate or that they are the only country capable of helping all the other countries as Hirohito and Goebbels does but he does hint to the people that they need to win. By Churchill saying, “You ask, what is our policy?” this hints that the people have a responsibility that they must follow through with. They have to follow the policy that Churchill tells them so that they can win and bring their countries and many others back to the way they need to be—out of the war.

All these speakers include their people by giving them a duty or telling them it is their fate. By doing this, it leads the people to want to follow their leaders even more and to bring their countries out of the turmoil and terror they are experiencing. It is a way for the leaders to keep the people motivated and ready for any challenges that may come.

Toulman Analysis

Once A Bully: Program for Bullies
  • Claim: There should be a program for the bully to help them out of bullying others.
  • Warrant: Bullies pick on others to make themselves feel better.
  • Reason: Bullies have internal problems that causes them to bully others.
  • Qualifier: Most bullies bully because they have power, family, or social issues that they try to handle on their own through bullying.
  • Rebuttal: We shouldn't focus on the bully but instead focus on who they are bullying. The bullies aren't the one killing themselves but the victims. If we begin to focus on the bully, we lose track of those who are being bullied. Also, bullies won't want any help. They will still bully even after going through a program.
  • Backing: If typed, "Why do people bully," on Google, almost all websites will say that the bully has some sort of internal problem that is causing them to bully. Catherine Bradshaw, a psychologist, said that must bullies want a sense of power and to keep their social groups closer and let out others. Research shows that an average or above average of bullies bully because they have self esteem problems. Research has also shown that if a child's parents are aggressive at home, then these children tend to be bullies later on in there teenager years.

Once A Bully

Many people cannot easily speak about their issues. It is easier to hide it inside and try to fix it themselves. The thoughts that may come to their mind is—no one can help me, they won’t understand, I’m fine. By not seeking the consoling of others, it can only make things worse especially if someone takes the emotions that they have hidden inside and bully others. Bullies, usually, bother others because of something that is going on in their lives that they can’t handle or don’t know how to handle. Without knowing what else to do, they take their emotions and hurt others to make themselves feel better for just that second. When have you heard someone say they were proud to have bullied someone? Have you heard of any bully that would stand up and shout out to the world that they bully people just for the heck of it? There is no bully that I know of that has every bullied because they thought it was the best thing in the world. People who bully usually have an issue that causes them to bully others.

The different situations that cause someone to bully are cultural cause, institutional cause, social issues, family issues, personal history, power issues, and provocative victims. All these situations are different and can affect someone to go out and bully others. With each of these situations, the best way to handle it is to bring that person to a trusted adult or anyone that can help them. But, how many people will admit they are going through an issue? Not many. How many people will go to an adult if they are having a problem? Not many again. There has to be a way to help the bully with their own problems and for these bullies to go out and bring other bullies to get help as well. This is where Once A Bully comes in.

Once A Bully will be a program that helps bullies with their problems and helps them to go out and help other bullies as well. This program will bring in bullies who have issues and don’t know how to handle it. Through the help of ex-bullies, therapist, and anyone who specialize in helping others, this program will let the bully acknowledge what they are doing isn’t the right way to handle what they are going through and helps them to find other productive ways of conquering their problems. It is understood that it isn’t easy to openly say, “I have a problem.” Bullying should never be the road to take to help yourself though. This program is there to only help and not condemn anyone. Bullying can be prevented and one way to start is to help the bully.

Tomulin Analysis

In Switch It Around, there is usage of data, warrants, and backing helps to enhance the blog on the topic that bullies should have their own programs and consoling to help them out of problems that cause them to bully. The data used in the blog is talking about a test that was run in the United States and United Kingdom that showed the third leading cause to teenage death is suicide and half of these suicides are due to bullying. The country should be trying there upmost hardest to not let this happen among the teenagers that are trying to make it in this world. But yet, bulling is occurring more and more. The warrant then comes in on how there are ways of help for the ones being bullied but none for the bully. Yes, the one being bullied is vulnerable and should be taken care of but the bully should have the same rights as well. The bully should be looked at as a person as well that is fighting battles and is causing battles to forget about the ones he or she is facing. Though not normal to take the enemy’s side, the warrant helps to bring in the main claim that is presented. Although there are many ways for someone to get help that is being, there is no real known program for the bullies. There should be a program that helps bullies out of bulling and with any internal issues they may have so that there will be less bullies and less suicides occurring. By starting at the root of the problem, the problem can be stopped all together. If there is no change in the bullies life that is causing the bully to bully others, then the bully will continue on and more lives will be taken. These are few backings that help support the main claim and the warrant. The blog shows that maybe the ways we are looking at bullying now isn’t the right ways and that there should be a change to help stop what is hurting the lives of many teenager around the world.

Audience Brainstorm

SEVEN POSSIBLE CHOICES

o Teenagers
o Teachers
o Parents
o Orginization managers
o Guidance Counsulers
o Criminal system
o Bullies

TOP THREE

o Orginization leaders because they would be the ones to launch a program that helps the bullies cope with their problems and not just focusing on the victim. Orginization leaders could help in building a strong program that really helps the bullies so that they won’t fall back into the same pattern of bullying and may help or stop another bully from bullying. A negative point to this is that they may not follow through with the program if it isnt successful.
o Bullies because they are the ones that are bullying. Appealing to them to figure out why they bully and why they push people to feel little about themself through a program can help decrease bullying, it can help the bully to improve in their life and help others who are the bully or someone being bullied. It could be hard to appeal to a bully since I am not a bully and far from it, I mean not be able to show myself creditable to the bully to understand his or her problems.
o Teenagers because they already learn that bullies bully because they want to feel superior. They see the bully as the victim when sometimes the bully could be the victim themself. Changing the thought of bullies a little and showing that they have problems as well coups help bring students to try and help both parties and continue on to do so. Appealing to students could be a problem in that they may not do what they heard. Bullying is talked about a lot and yet students still dont seem to care.it may be hard to appeal to them to make them stop and actually end bullying.

I CHOOSE.....

Switch It Around

Everyone know something about bullying. It is hard to be ignorant on the topic since it is either on the news or all over the internet. Bullying has become a serious issue within the Unites States and all over the world. Tests ran in the United States and Britain has shown that suicide has become the third leading cause of death for young people with half of those youths killing themselves because of bullying. With an issue this serious, of course many will take action to stop it. States have laws and policies on how to address bullying. Many organizations were made to help those who have been bullied. Websites were built to help victims with bullying and to prevent any more suicides. People all over are trying to encourage one another and bring awareness on the issue of bullying. Schools have made time to teach students what bullying is and how to prevent it. These as all good ways to deal with bullying and to stop it. By teaching and bringing awareness, many will now be able to know how to deal with bullying and stop it if they see it. By bring the government into it, bullies are frightened of the consequences that can be put upon them if they bully someone. These all, again, good ideas but what about moving away from these approaches. What about teaching those who are being victimized to man up. Yes, I said it. Man up. It may be harsh but it needs to be heard. Killing yourself is a wimpy move and just shows how weak you are. This may be mean but I believe that those who are bullied are those who have no confidence in themselves. Those who let anyone tell them who they are and define who they will be aren't being strong enough to take back their identity and define them self. Bullies search and prey on the weak. If there aren't any weak, who is there to bully?
Also, we should figure out what's wrong with the bully. Many bullies have issues internally which pushes them to attack others. Maybe they are having issues at home and can't be in control of their home issue so they control others at school. Maybe they have no money to buy new clothes so they pick on someone does have that privilege. Maybe they are abused at home and decide to abuse others to let their anger out. Has anyone every thought to sympathize for the bully? Believe it or not, the bully is a person as well. They aren't monsters. We must also have programs and organizations to help the bully-- to save he or she from the issues they may be going through. It is better to stop the issue from the root. Help the bully. Don't just look at the victim but also take into consideration on what the bully must go through. It is time that we don't just make a couple laws and a few programs that help the victim but also go to help the bully and teach the victims to tough up. It is time that we switch things up because more teenagers are dying from bullying.

Are you helping or causing it?

How many times have you heard someone kill them self in the past two years? How many of those people were teenagers? Now, how many of those teenagers killed them self because of bullying. Bullying is running rapid thorough out our generation and suicide is following right behind it. More teenagers are killing themselves because of the harsh words that come out of the mouths of bullies in schools and over the internet. Bullies can come in all shapes and forms. We all picture the bully to be some mean girl who is a queen bee and targets some innocent girl with braces and glasses to make herself feel better. Maybe we think about big, husky boy who tells a nerd to give him his lunch money then slams down his books onto the floor. We all hate these bullies because they are the ones that are trying their hardest to strike down the weaker link. But stop and think. Have you said a few bad words about one of your schoolmates to your friends? Have you laughed at someone's outfit or maybe even their hair? Small acts like these, if heard from the one you were talking about, can be crucial and damaging. It can lead them to become more insecure and venerable. Even small little jokes that aren't meant to be taken wrongly can be easily misinterpreted. We have to be careful of the words that we say. Yes, it may be hard to do. Words are easy to just flow out of our mouths without us thinking. But if we don't watch the words we say, who will? No one. We have to take this seriously. A life that could have very well changed the world was lost to bullying. A life that could have made a new invention was lost to bullying. A life that could have helped another life was lost to bullying. We don't think about the impact that person could have had in the future. They could have been great but we took away that greatness. We really have to take into consideration how precious a life is. If we don't, then we will carelessly keep on bullying. We have to be aware of what we do and aware others as well. Bullying can take a life. A life that is taken is now a damaging the future ahead.

It Still Happens

“That the native does not like the tourist is not hard to explain. For every native of every place is a potential tourist, and every tourist is a native of somewhere. Every native everywhere lives a life of overwhelming and crushing banality and boredom and desperation and depression, and every deed, good and bad, is an attempt to forget this. Every native would like to find a way out , every native would like a rest, every native would like a tour. But some natives—most native in the world—cannot go anywhere. They are too poor. They are too poor to go anywhere. They are too poor to escape the reality of their lives; and they are too poor to live properly in the place where they live, which is the very place you, the tourist, want to go—so when the natives see you, the tourist, they envy you, they envy your ability to leave your own banality and boredom, envy your ability to turn their own banality and boredom into a source of pleasure for yourself.”

Bullying is a topic that we are all probably very tired of hearing. Though we make laws and try to stop the bullying, there is still so many that still commit suicide. Not only do we have continuous presentations that show the consequences of bullying and how it affects others, teenagers still bully, more lives lost, and it seems nothing will change. Everyone is trying to prevent bullying from happening, they are all trying to help, even our school is actively involved. But many words--ones that shouldn't be said-- are still said. It's a frightening thing. That teenagers are not valuing others at all. We aren't taking the time to get to know each other; and instead we are judging each other by what we see on the outside, by who we choose to love, by rumors, and it hurts-- not only the person being bullied, not only parents, not only family, not only their close friends and maybe their girlfriend or boyfriend, but it also hurts the people who are trying so hard to stop bullying from ever happening.

Dancing Scarecrows: An Incite To Anthonia (Nia) Wray

I was my father's first born. His name was Anthony. Since I couldn't be Anthony Jr, my mother decided to change my father's name into a girl's name, Anthonia. Does that mean I'm the female  version of my father? In ways, I guess you could say I am. We share many qualities but we have our difference which makes me unique from my father.
In the urban dictionary, my name refers to someone who is beautiful, intelligent, honest, and has a passion for living and loving. This describes me oh so well. From my mother's point of view, I'm a beautiful person. I would say I'm a beautiful person as well. All my friends and family would say I'm intelligent and honest. With the passion for living and loving, I think I do both a little too much sometimes. I love everyone I meet which could be creepy but I don't care. Unless someone gives me a reason to not love them, then I will love them like crazy. I live life the best way I can. Every opportunity to try something new, I go for it. Why not? Live life while we still have it right. Yolo!
As amazing as Anthonia sounds, I barely use that name. Some people don't even know that's my name. I usually go by Nia. 9 out of 10 people say Anthonia incorrectly. It's better to make my life and theirs easier by telling them to call me Nia.
If you Google Nia, it would probably lead you to a gym which does Nia. Nia is a movement practice drawn from martial arts, dance arts, and healing arts. The practice of Nia puts two of my passions into one. I want to be a doctor when I grow up. I love the thought of  helping people to be as healthy as they possibly can be. I also love to dance. I love doing it and watching it. The practice of Nia helps people with their health through dancing. That's an awesome way to combine these two of my loves.
To wrap it all up, is my last name, Wray. The W is silent so someone would just say Ray when saying my last name. Wray is a village in the United Kingdom. It's a beautiful village which is small and friendly looking. It matches me because I am small and friendly. This village is also known for its scarecrows. I have never seen a scarecrow and I don't plan to see any soon. Scarecrows are made to be scary. I am the opposite of a scarecrow. I don't really scare anyone. I smile way too much to be scary. Also scarecrows are portrayed as brainless from the Wizard of Oz. As mentioned before, I am a smart person so that description doesn't match me either.
All together, my name matches me perfectly. Each part holds a part of me. From my fun side of dancing and living life to my more serious side of wanting to be a doctor. I am my name and my name is me. I would never change either because they fit each other.
